Focus On Your Section
Sometimes my girlfriend gets overwhelmed by her emotions.
More often than not, it’s because she is trying to control everything in her life, and do everything all at once.
She can get worked up about the future so much that she finds herself paralyzed in her present moments.
That’s when my patience steps in, and I listen to all she’s going through and I score big time boyfriend points. There is a go to strategy I use to help her find peace of mind. It’s a simple phrase she and I are both very familiar with
“Focus on your section.”
You see, my girlfriend and I both work at different restaurants as servers. But one common idea in the restaurant industry is when your boss assigns you a certain number of tables to serve, and that is your section.
So if you get off track and are working on tasks that are taking away from you helping your guests, your boss might come by and say, “Focus on your section.” When I say this sentence to my girlfriend when life has her overwhelmed emotionally, it helps her see that she is too focused on things she can’t control. She then can take some deep breaths, a few steps back, and “focus on her section.” Jesus made a perfect case in Matthew 6 that teaches us how to “focus on our section” as we aim to love and serve others in life.
Verses to consider:
“But seek first the kingdom of Godg and His righteousness, and all these things will be added unto you. Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Today has enough trouble of its own.”
Matthew 6:33-34
Every one of us has a sphere of influence. People we encounter during our days, a place we live and work and play. That is your section. That should be your focus. Don’t get so caught up in trying to figure out the next few weeks, months or years. Sure it’s okay to plan and be proactive but not at the expense of your peace of mind today. If you find yourself “in the weeds” as we say in the restaurant world, and you’re not sure how to overcome the stress, doubt, worry and fear, maybe you need to get back to what God has called you to do, and focus on what is within your control. He has given you that section for a reason.
Don’t run from it, focus on it.
Much love,
Lowery
