I’m Gonna Let It Shine

A coworker of mine started listening to my music years ago.

On our breaks, I would show her new songs I was working on.

She’d give her feedback, but mostly she would encourage me to keep at it,

and she helped me stay motivated to continue.

She was married with two young kids and always let me know that my songs were often listened to in her house.

After I left that job, I received a message from her via Facebook.

It was one of those messages that seem simple on the surface,

but for me, it has put years of fuel in my tank.

She simply shared,

“Your words, are lights in my darkness.”

This visual pierces my mind and overwhelms me with a sense of purpose.

To think that the words I share, can serve as lights that help someone else find their way out of their dark times in life?

Isn’t that the power of music?

Isn’t that the power of human connection?

That summarizes exactly why I make music in the first place.

I want the words I say to lead people to the light. Our world is dark, that’s no secret.

For me, the Bible is clear that we are here to be a light in a dark world. We are here to follow the Sunday school song anyone learned growing up in church:

“This little light of mine, I’m gonna let it shine.”

Isaiah also shares in chapter 55 His Word does not return to Him void, it always does what He intends it to do. Our dark world is in desperate need of our words of light that we hear from Him.

Verses to consider:

“You are the light of the world, a city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden.”

Matthew 5:14

“in the midst of a crooked and perverse generation, among whom you shine as lights in the world,”

Philippians 2:15

Your next steps:

Whether you believe it or not, your words can be lights in someone's dark world.

You don’t need to be a pastor.

You don’t need to hold a microphone as a singer or rapper.

Think of someone you know who is going through some tough times.

Pick your phone up, and text them a message of encouragement right now.

Seriously, how many times in your life has it helped you knowing that someone is in your corner? Sometimes it can be just as simple as texting them saying

“Hey, I was thinking about you today and I want you to know I’m in your corner

and I’m available if you ever need someone to talk to.”

Any variation you choose to write will be better than nothing at all.

Trust me, your words will light up their day.

"This little light of mine, I'm gonna let it shine."

All love,

Lowery
